Common Lizard ©Mark PollittA new local group promoting the study and conservation of the region's native amphibians and reptiles will be established at a meeting next month. WWT Caerlaverock will host the evening meeting on 14 May to discuss the formation of a group to further the conservation of this overlooked and often misunderstood group of animals. The group will become one of a number of local amphibian and reptile groups - ARGs - around the UK.

Dumfries and Galloway is home to all nine species of Scottish native terrestrial reptiles and amphibians and is also a hotspot for sightings of marine turtles. The rare Natterjack Toad reaches reaches the northerly tip of its range in the region.

The meeting will include a talk by Peter Leach, an experienced Scottish herpetologist and a key member of the Lothians Amphibian and Reptile Group, a discussion about establishing the new group followed by an evening walk to hear, and hopefully see, Natterjack Toads on the reserve.

The meeting is open for anyone to attend - you do not need to be an expert to come along, just someone with an interest in amphibians and reptiles and their conservation. There will be a small charge (£2-3). To book a place or for more information please contact Mark Pollitt at the DGERC.
