Welcome to Wildlife booklet coverA new booklet about the best places to see wildlife in Dumfries and Galloway is now available. 'Welcome to Wildlife in Dumfries & Galloway' is a free, fully illustrated 24 page booklet which aims to give local people and visitors an introduction to the wildlife of Dumfries and Galloway.

The publication has been funded by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and produced in partnership with the Dumfries and Galloway Environmental Resources Centre (DGERC). It updates and improves a popular booklet that was first published in 2001.

Mennock pass in the Lowther Hills

The booklet is divided into four sections, which focus on coasts, woodlands, lochs and hills, each highlighting the best places to see wild plants, birds and animals at different times of the year. The centre section contains a map showing the location of all the sites featured. Simple directions on how to get to each place are given - most are accessible by public transport as well as by car and National Cycle Route links are listed where appropriate.

Mark Pollitt, DGERC Manager said: "Dumfries and Galloway is a region rich in wildlife and a rewarding place for anyone with an interest in nature. It has a long, varied coastline, extensive hilly areas and numerous lochs, rivers and woodlands. All of these places have a unique combination of plants and animals and there are many wildlife spectacles to be seen. We hope the booklet will introduce more people to the wildlife of the area and enhance their experience and enjoyment of their days out."

Chris Miles, SNH Area Manager, said: "This booklet is targeted at the increasing number of local people and visitors who are realising just how rich the natural heritage of Dumfries and Galloway is. In particular it will help our tourism businesses provide useful information to their visitors on where to go and what to see. Scottish Natural Heritage is delighted to have worked with the Dumfries and Galloway Environmental Resources Centre to produce the booklet . We support the work of the DGERC, which is becoming the best place for people to get information about all of the region's wildlife, especially through their new web site."

Free copies of the booklet will be available from the Tourist Information Centres, nature reserves and visitor centres and other local outlets in Dumfries and Galloway. Copies can also be ordered from local SNH offices in Dumfries Tel: 01387 247010 and Newton Stewart Tel: 01671 401075 or from the DGERC office (please send A5 SAE). An electronic version of the booklet can be downloaded from the downloads page of our website.
