Dumfries and Galloway Council are currently consulting on proposed revisions to the Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP). Now is time for you to have your say and input to this process by viewing the proposed revised plan and submitting your comments.

LBAP1998.jpgIn 1998 the Dumfries and Galloway LBAP was published to much acclaim and has achieved a great deal since that time. However as our local and national environemnt changes it is necessary to review the plan and bring it up to date. Over the last year (and more) many individuals and groups have been involved in discussions and meetings regarding the review and updating of the Dumfries & Galloway Local Biodiversity Action Plan. Notices have appeared in local papers over the last week or so advertising the public consultation on the draft of the second edition. Below is further information about how and where you can get involved.

The documents published for consultation comprise:

  • Dumfries & Galloway Local Biodiversity Action Plan (Second Edition) Consultation Draft.
  • Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Environmental Report.
  • SEA Environmental Report Appendix A.
  • SEA Environmental Report Appendix B.

Copies of the full consultation documents are available from the sources below:

  • Electronic copies can be downloaded from www.dumgal.gov.uk/biodiversity
  • Electronic copies can be emailed or sent on CD on request.
  • Paper copies can be viewed in public libraries.

Consultation workshops will be held at the following times and locations:

  • 7.30pm Tuesday 12 February at McMillan Hall, Newton Stewart
  • 7.30pm Wednesday 13 February at Lockerbie Town Hall

Further details will be announced in the press soon. Booking is required for both events.

In addition, I will be at a number of locations across the region and there is open invitation for anyone to drop-in and have a chat with Peter Norman, Biodiversity Officer at Dumfries and Galloway Council, about the draft plan.

  • 11am-2pm on Tuesday 5 February at Kirkconnel Parish Heritage Society Base, 40A Main Street, Kirkconnel.
  • 11am-2pm on Friday 8 February at Stranraer Library
  • 11am-2pm on Saturday 9 February at Buccleuch Centre, Langholm
  • 12noon-3pm on Sunday 10 February at RSPB Mersehead Visitor Centre, Southwick
  • 11am-2pm on Friday 15 February at Catstrand Arts Centre, New Galloway
  • 12noon-3pm on Sunday 24 February at WWT Caerlaverock Visitor Centre, Dumfries

These will also be advertised in the press soon. There is no need to book.

Consultation responses should be made in writing and can be returned by the following methods:

  • Online at www.dumgal.gov.uk/biodiversity (follow the links).
  • By email to pe.biodversity@dumgal.gov.uk
  • By post (using the response form from the website if you wish) to Consultation on Local Biodiversity Action Plan, Dumfries & Galloway Council, Planning & Environment, Newall Terrace, Dumfries DG1 1LW

The consultation period runs until 14 March 2008.

Please note that the complete Consultation Draft is a very long document and it is not expected that all sections will be relevant to all respondents. It is therefore recommended that respondents concentrate on Sections B. Background Issues, C. Overall Aims and D. Central Actions, then select from the remaining sections only those that are of greatest relevance/interest to their particular circumstances. If you intend making a detailed response to the whole document, Peter Norman has a very limited number of hard copies available.
