An observant recorder in the Cree Valley made the exciting discovery of a new species of dragonfly for the region. Keeled Skimmer (┬ęPeter Robinson)Whilst surveying for frogs and newts near Cumloden (north of Newton Stewart) for the National Amphibian and Reptile Recording Scheme, Peter Robinson discovered and photographed a male Keeled Skimmer Orthetrum coerulescens, a species recorded previously on only three occasions. The identification was easily confirmed from the photograph and a subsequent visit by local entomologists Richard and Barbara Mearns and Jim McCleary confirmed breeding at the site through the presence of larvae in the pools.

This exciting new finding continues the discovery of new Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) species found in Dumfries and Galloway, with recent years seeing records of Broad-bodied Chaser Libellula depressa, Migrant Hawker Aeshna mixta and Banded Demoiselle Calopteryx splendens.
