An exciting new project celebrating the regions woodlands and their wildlife will be launched by DGERC later this year. The Woodland Guardians project will encourage people to find out more about their local woodlands and their wildlife, and to record the species that they see there. A grant of just under £50000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and additional financial support from Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Forestry Commission Scotland will enable the employment of a full-time project officer who will work to develop a programme of activities throughout 2008-09.

Carstramon Wood (©Peter Norman)Over the next two years there will be a programme of informal training courses, recording days, talks, school visits and two conferences which will enable new and experienced recorders to learn about the regions woodlands. The project also aims to introduce some species of wildlife that we know relatively little about, such as lichens and fungi, highlighting certain species that anyone can recognise and help to find out where they occur in our region.

If you would like to learn more about woodland plants and animals and to help us record valuable information about them then watch out for further news about the project in spring 2008.
