D&G butterfly booklet coverButterfly Conservation have published a new free guide to help with identification of the butterflies and moths of Dumfries & Galloway and Ayrshire.
The guide takes the form of a 16-page booklet, with colour photographs and descriptions of the 32 species found regularly in southwest Scotland. It also usefully highlights those which are of greatest conservation concern and provides a useful chart to show the times of year that each species is usually on the wing.
As well as butterflies, the booklet also gives similar information on some of the commoner species of day-flying moths, such as the Six-spot Burnet, Cinnabar and Speckled Yellow.
A short guide to 13 of the best places to visit to see a range of butterfly species is also given in the centre pages, each one listing some of the species you may find at the sites.
The leaflet is available free from nature reserves and visitor centres, the DGERC office, council ranger services and is also available to download in electronic format (see the Downloads section).
