Neighbourhood Nature Watch
Raising awareness of biodiversity by involving local communities in wildlife recording
In 2006, the DGERC was awarded almost £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to run an exciting new project in Dumfries and Galloway. Neighbourhood Nature Watch, which runs until October 2007, increases the opportunities for local communities to find out about wildlife in their local area and encouraged people to record the wildlife they see.
The project has incorporated a number of aspects, aimed at encouraging people to find out more about their local wildlife. Activities included two surveys in summer 2006, a conference for people interested in local wildlife and wildlife recording and a publication pulling together an overview of the year’s wildlife recording activities. The most exciting of all was the establishment of a searchable website, which will enable locals and visitors to the region to find out about the wildlife nearby.
